The Godfather Opening Scene

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB9cLr7OR-A
Lowkey lighting used on the man asking for help to suggest a sense of danger or something leading to come in the film about him.
Natural light on "the godfather" to suggest or represent the main character or a sense of importance about him.
Background and props are badley lit and use minimal lighting to suggest a danger about the room or the people in it as well as a sense of mystery.
Plant pot lighted that hasn't been watered to suggest a weak or dying idea by the man asking the godfather.
Red rose connotes evil and murder in which it has been lit while the godfather wheres it.

How are horror conventions challenged in scream?

One of the main conventions of a horror film that is challenged in scream is the fact that the main character in the film; "Drew Barrimore" dies in the opening scene. This challenges the conventions of horror as many expect the main character to remain in the film throughout until the end with the "final face off" with the villain. This adds a sense of mystery to the audience and keeps them on edge as they have never experienced something like this in a horror film before. We know that Drew Barrimore is the main character as the character is portrayed in posters and advertisements with the title of the film.

The opening scene of "scream" shows many other conventions of horror such as the reference to the film "halloween" with the knife when shes talking about her favourite horror films as it shows a glimse of what is to come in the film and how she tries to protect herself.
